Edward Christopher Weatherly papers, 1890-1936.

The papers include an extensive collection of materials pertaining to mines and mining in the San Juan Region of Colorado the bulk of which comprise printed materials such as journals, magazines and pamphlets. Weatherly's correspondence (1890-1934), articles and other writings on mining, currency and politics are a major part of the collection. Also included are blueprints, mining claims, diagrams of mines, legal records (1902-1934), personal financial papers, census information, photographs, newspapers, clippings, and a small book collection. Materials collected by Edward Weatherly's wife, Margaret Enright Weatherly, include correspondence (1935-1936), religious writings, domestic articles, poetry and music.

Dr. Edward Christopher Weatherly (1855-1934) was one of 13 children born to an aristocratic English family on June 2, 1855, in Portishead, Somerset, England. He graduated from Oxford University as a Doctor of Medicine. In 1888, he immigrated to the United States where he abondoned the practice of medicine to become a newspaper writer and an expert on mining matters. Born in Toledo, Ohio, September 6, 1878, Carl Conrad Eckhardt received his B.A. degree from Ohio State University in 1902, when he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He went on to earn his M.A. degree from the University of Michigan in 1904 and his Ph.D. from Cornell University in 1908.
